June 13, 2019Alarming increase in number of aged care home flu deaths

The number of South Australians dying due to the influenza virus continues to skyrocket, as authorities reveal an alarming development in the crisis.
So far, 12,339 cases of the flu have been recorded for 2019, with 17 deaths reported to health authorities.
Across the state, 18 nursing homes have been closed to all visitors since the beginning of this year as the virus continues to claim the lives of South Australians.

This morning, SA Health Chief Medical Officer Professor Paddy Phillips revealed that 13 of the victims were residents of aged care homes.
There have been five in one facility, two in another and one each in six others,” he said.
“It also means there have been four other deaths in the community that we know of from influenza and that’s why we very much encourage everyone to get a flu shot every year.”

A total of 53 influenza outbreaks have been reported in aged care facilities since the start of the year.
